Конструкція to have something done використовується для вираження дій, які мовець виконує не самостійно, а замість нього їх виконує хтось інший.
Ця конструкція є різновидом Passive Voice, але її особливістю є те, що дія виконується замість нас та для нас кимось іншим (часто професіоналом в певній сфері та за певну платню). Також така конструкція може передавати значення небажаної дії, що сталася з людиною (пограбування, аварія тощо).
Конструкція to have something done може бути використана в усіх часових формах, а також з модальними дієсловами, конструкціями to be going to, it is worth. В такому випадку тільки дієслово have змінює свою форму.
- He will be having his car checked at 10 a.m. tomorrow. – Його машину (йому) будуть перевіряти завтра о 10-й ранку.
- You should have your wisdom tooth removed. – Тобі варто видалити зуб мудрості.
- I’m going to have my back examined. – Я збираюся зробити огляд спини.
- It is worth having your hair colored. – Це варто того, щоб тобі пофарбували волосся.
- Mr. Jenkins had his shop robbed last night. – Магазин містера Дженкінса пограбували минулої ночі.
Стверджувальне речення
Для того, щоб утворити стверджувальне речення з цією конструкцією, необхідний підмет (хто? що?), після якого стоїть дієслово to have в потрібній часовій або особовій формі, далі вживається прямий додаток (об'єкт, над яким відбувається дія) та смислове дієслово в третій формі (Past Participle).
Смислове дієслово в третій формі обов'язково повинно стояти після об'єкту (додатку), інакше така конструкція буде мати форму та значення часової групи Perfect.
- I had my shoes repaired.– Мені відремонтували черевики.
- Jane wants to have her hair colored. – Джейн хоче, щоб їй пофарбували волосся.
- We have been having our flat repaired for 3 months. – Нам ремонтують квартиру (вже) протягом 3-х місяців.
Заперечне речення
Для утворення заперечного речення перед have в першій формі використовуються допоміжні дієслова (do, have, be), свій для кожного граматичного часу, після якого ставиться заперечна частка not. Загальний порядок слів в реченні не змінюється.
- I didn’t have my shoes repaired. – Мені не відремонтували черевики.
- Jane will not have her hair colored. – Джейн не пофарбують волосся.
- We haven’t had our flat repaired yet. – Нам ще не відремонтували квартиру.
Питальне речення
Для утворення загального питання допоміжні дієслова (do, have, be), свій для кожного граматичного часу, ставиться на початок речення перед підметом.
- Did you have your shoes repaired? – Тобі відремонтували черевики?
- Will Jane have her hair colored? – Джейн пофарбують волосся?
- Have they already had their flat repaired? – Їм вже відремонтували квартиру?
Спеціальне питання для have something done утворюється за допомогою питального слова або ж фрази, що ставиться в самому початку речення перед допоміжним дієсловом. Подальший порядок слів такий самий, як і в загальному питанні для have something done.
- When did you have your shoes repaired? – Коли тобі відремонтували черевики?
- Why will Jane have her hair colored? – Чому Джейн пофарбують волосся?
- How long have you been having your flat repaired? – Скільки вам вже ремонтують вашу квартиру?
Використання to have something done
Послуга
Конструкція to have something done використовується для вираження спланованої дії або ж послуги, яку виконують за бажанням людини для неї (часто спеціалістом та за певну платню).
- I have my dog walked every day. – Мені вигулюють собаку кожного дня.
- Jack had his disease cured in this clinic. – Джеку вилікували його хворобу в цій клініці.
Нещасний випадок, небажана дія
Конструкція to have something done також використовується для вираження непередбачуваної поганої або небажаної дії, що відбулася з кимось.
- Matt had all his money stolen. – У Метта вкрали всі гроші.
- I had my arm broken in a fight. – Мені зламали руку в бійці.
To get something done
В розмовному мовленні замість to have something done може також використовуватися конструкція to get something done.
- You have to get your hair cut, mate. – Друже, тобі потрібно підстригти волосся.
- Yay, I will get my nails done today. – Ура, мені зроблять сьогодні манікюр.

Future continuous
We can use the future continuous (will/won't be + -ing form) to talk about future actions that:
- will be in progress at a specific time in the future:
When you come out of school tomorrow, I'll be boarding a plane.
Try to call before 8 o'clock. After that, we'll be watching the match.
You can visit us during the first week of July. I won't be working then.
- we see as new, different or temporary:
Today we're taking the bus but next week we'll be taking the train.
He'll be staying with his parents for several months while his father is in recovery.
Will you be starting work earlier with your new job?
Future perfect
We use the future perfect simple (will/won't have + past participle) to talk about something that will be completed before a specific time in the future.
The guests are coming at 8 p.m. I'll have finished cooking by then.
On 9 October we'll have been married for 50 years.
Will you have gone to bed when I get back?
We can use phrases like by or by the time (meaning 'at some point before') and in or in a day's time / in two months' time / in five years' time etc. (meaning 'at the end of this period') to give the time period in which the action will be completed.
I won't have written all the reports by next week.
By the time we arrive, the kids will have gone to bed.
I'll have finished in an hour and then we can watch a film.
In three years' time, I'll have graduated from university.

So, Too, Neither and Either
'So do I' and 'neither do I'
(Download this explanation in PDF here).
I use 'so do I' to say that a positive sentence is also true for me, and I use 'neither do I' to say that a negative sentence is also true for me:
- John: I hate mushrooms.
- Me: So do I (=I also hate mushrooms).
- Lucy: I don't live in London.
- Me: Neither do I (=I also don't live in London. For example, maybe Lucy and I both live in Paris).
This is often used as a reply to someone else in a conversation, but both sentences can also be said by the same person, and even joined together:
- Me: Elizabeth loves coffee. So do I.
- Me: Harry doesn't play the piano and neither do I.
In my examples above, I use 'do' because the first sentence is in the present simple tense. The verb after 'so' or 'neither' changes depending on the tense of the verb in the first sentence. (This is very similar to tag questions).
Present simple: use 'do / does' | Lucy likes coffee. So do I. Lucy doesn't like coffee. Neither do I. |
Present simple with 'be': use 'am / is / are' | John's at the office. So am I. John isn't at the office. Neither am I. |
Present continuous: use 'am / is / are' | Luke's going out tonight. So am I. Luke isn't going out tonight. Neither am I. |
Past Simple: use 'did' | Jill went to the cinema yesterday. So did I. Jill didn't go to the cinema yesterday. Neither did I. |
Past simple with 'be': use 'was / were' | She was at the library. So was I. She wasn't at the library. Neither was I. |
Present perfect: use 'have / has' | They've been to Colombia. So have I. They haven't been to Colombia. Neither have I. |
Future simple: use 'will' | Edward will be at the cafe later. So will I. Edward won't be at the cafe later. Neither will I. |
Modal verbs: repeat the modal verb | He would like a cup of tea. So would I. He wouldn't like a cup of tea. Neither would I. Emma can speak Russian. So can I. Emma can't speak Russian. Neither can I. |
What about 'too' and 'either'?
We can also use 'I do too' and 'I don't either', which mean the same as 'so do I' and 'neither do I':
- John: I hate mushrooms.
- Me: I do too (=I also hate mushrooms).
- Lucy: I don't live in London.
- Me: I don't either (=I also don't live in London).
The verb changes in the same way as with 'so do I' and 'neither do I' (remember you need a negative verb with 'either'):
- Present simple: John's at the office. I am too.
- Present continuous: Luke isn't going out tonight. I'm not either.
- Present perfect: They've been to Colombia. I have too.
- Modal verbs: Emma can't speak Russian. I can't either.
'Me too' and 'me neither':
We can also use 'me too' and 'me neither'. 'Me too' has the same meaning as 'so + auxiliary verb + I' and 'me neither' has the same meaning as 'neither + auxiliary verb + I'. 'Me too' and 'me neither' are very informal:
- John: I hate mushrooms.
- Me: Me too (=I also hate mushrooms).
- Lucy: I don't live in London.
- Me: Me neither (=I also don't live in London).
Subjects other than 'I':
Of course, we can also use these expressions to talk about what's true for other people, not just ourselves:
- John: I hate mushrooms.
- Me: So does Laura / Laura does too / Laura too.
- Lucy: I don't live in London.
- Me: Neither does David / David doesn't either / David neither.
Some more examples:
- We live in London and so do they.
- Emma loves tennis. Jill and Laura do too.
- My parents don't come here often. Neither does Alex.
- She isn't French and neither is he.
- You don't like cold weather. Neither do we.

The 12 Main Literary Genres
- Literary Fiction. Literary fiction novels are considered works with artistic value and literary merit. They often include political criticism, social commentary, and reflections on humanity. Literary fiction novels are typically character-driven, as opposed to being plot-driven, and follow a character’s inner story.
- Mystery. Mystery novels, also called detective fiction, follow a detective solving a case from start to finish. They drop clues and slowly reveal information, turning the reader into a detective trying to solve the case, too.
- Thriller. Thriller novels are dark, mysterious, and suspenseful plot-driven stories. They very seldom include comedic elements, but what they lack in humor, they make up for in suspense.
- Horror. Horror novels are meant to scare, startle, shock, and even repulse readers. Generally focusing on themes of death, demons, evil spirits, and the afterlife, they prey on fears with scary beings like ghosts, vampires, werewolves, witches, and monsters.
- Historical. Historical fiction novels take place in the past. Written with a careful balance of research and creativity, they transport readers to another time and place—which can be real, imagined, or a combination of both. Many historical novels tell stories that involve actual historical figures or historical events within historical settings.
- Romance. Romantic fiction centers around love stories between two people. They’re lighthearted, optimistic, and have an emotionally satisfying ending. Romance novels do contain conflict, but it doesn’t overshadow the romantic relationship, which always prevails in the end.
- Western tells the stories of cowboys, settlers, and outlaws exploring the western frontier and taming the American Old West. They’re shaped specifically by their genre-specific elements and rely on them in ways that novels in other fiction genres don’t. Westerns aren’t as popular as they once were; the golden age of the genre coincided with the popularity of western films in the 1940s, ‘50s, and ‘60s.
- Bildungsroman. Bildungsroman is a literary genre of stories about a character growing psychologically and morally from their youth into adulthood. Generally, they experience a profound emotional loss, set out on a journey, encounter conflict, and grow into a mature person by the end of the story.
- Speculative Fiction. Speculative fiction is a supergenre that encompasses a number of different types of fiction, from science fiction to fantasy to dystopian. The stories take place in a world different from our own.
- Science Fiction. Sci-fi novels are speculative stories with imagined elements that don’t exist in the real world. Some are inspired by “hard” natural sciences like physics, chemistry, and astronomy; others are inspired by “soft” social sciences like psychology, anthropology, and sociology. Common elements of sci-fi novels include time travel, space exploration, and futuristic societies.
- Fantasy. Fantasy novels are speculative fiction stories with imaginary characters set in imaginary universes. They’re inspired by mythology and folklore and often include elements of magic. The genre attracts both children and adults; well-known titles include Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll and the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling.
- Realist Literature. Realist fiction novels are set in a time and place that could actually happen in the real world. They depict real people, places, and stories in order to be as truthful as possible. Realist works of fiction remain true to everyday life and abide by the laws of nature as we currently understand them.

Use of Passive
Passive voice is used when the focus is on the action. It is not important or not known, however, who or what is performing the action.
Example: My bike was stolen.
In the example above, the focus is on the fact that my bike was stolen. I do not know, however, who did it.
Sometimes a statement in passive is more polite than active voice, as the following example shows:
Example: A mistake was made.
In this case, I focus on the fact that a mistake was made, but I do not blame anyone (e.g. You have made a mistake.).
Form of Passive
Subject + finite form of to be + Past Participle (3rd column of irregular verbs)
Example: A letter was written.
When rewriting active sentences in passive voice, note the following:
- the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence
- the finite form of the verb is changed (to be + past participle)
- the subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence (or is dropped)

Passive Sentences with Two Objects
Rewriting an active sentence with two objects in passive voice means that one of the two objects becomes the subject, the other one remains an object. Which object to transform into a subject depends on what you want to put the focus on.

and how to use them
In their most common uses, both, either and neither are binary connectors or determiners; in other words they are used to associate or to link, either in the affirmative or in the negative, two entities (people, objects, abstractions).
But in the end, their usage is actually fairly straightforward: so before looking at the different uses of these words, let's correct some of the mistakes that students often make.
1. Incorrect use of both, either and neither
The mistakes you should not make....
NEVER put an article or other determiner directly BEFORE both, either or neither

The word both is used to associate two entities in an affirmative context. As a quantifier, it has the meaning of "two".There are six essential structures :
- Examples 1 to 3 Both can be used as a primary determiner directly before a noun, but not before a pronoun.
- Examples 4 to 11 Both or both of can be used as a secondary determiner before another determiner notably before an article or a possessive, or (in the case of both of) before a pronoun.
- Examples 12 to 16. Both can be used as a secondary determiner placed after a noun or a pronoun. In the case of nouns, this structure is only used with the subject of a sentence; in the case of pronouns, it is used with subject pronouns and object pronouns.
- Examples 17 to 20 Both can be used as a pronoun.
- Both... and are used as correlating coordinators. See below.
- I support both teams, but I prefer Manchester United.
- Both answers are right.
- Both machines are in good working order

Even if this is part of the subject of a sencence.
Both ... and as correlating coordinators
We use both (+noun or pronoun) followed by and (+noun or pronoun) to add extra emphasis to the relation between a pair of entities in an affirmative context.- Both Peter and Jim were at Oxford University in the 1990s.
- Both you and your father have been very helpful.
- I want to see both the Picasso exhibition and the Historical Museum.
Either and neither
Used alone (i.e. when not followed by or or by nor) either and neither are used in the same way as both, with the following differences :- Either and neither are never directly followed by an article or a determiner or a pronoun (see footnote)
- Either is a singular determiner or pronoun
- Either is sometimes used as an adverb standing at the end of a clause (example 16 below).
- Neither is normally used as a singular, but sometimes as a plural (example 6 below).

WHAT IS AN ECLIPSE?
WHAT IS A LUNAR ECLIPSE?
The moon moves in an orbit around Earth, and at the same time, Earth
orbits the sun. Sometimes Earth moves between the sun and the moon. When this
happens, Earth blocks the sunlight that normally is reflected by the moon.
(This sunlight is what causes the moon to shine.) Instead of light hitting the
moon’s surface, Earth’s shadow falls on it. This is an eclipse of the moon — a
lunar eclipse. A lunar eclipse can occur only when the moon is full.
A lunar eclipse can be seen from Earth at night. There are two types of
lunar eclipses: total lunar eclipses and partial lunar eclipses.
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon and the sun are on exact
opposite sides of Earth. Although the moon is in Earth’s shadow, some sunlight
reaches the moon. The sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere, which causes
Earth’s atmosphere to filter out most of the blue light. This makes the moon
appear red to people on Earth.
A partial lunar eclipse happens when only a part of the moon enters Earth’s
shadow. In a partial eclipse, Earth’s shadow appears very dark on the side of
the moon facing Earth. What people see from Earth during a partial lunar
eclipse depends on how the sun, Earth and moon are lined up.
A lunar eclipse usually lasts for a few hours. At least two partial lunar
eclipses happen every year, but total lunar eclipses are rare. It is safe to
look at a lunar eclipse.
WHAT IS A SOLAR ECLIPSE?
Sometimes when the moon orbits Earth, it moves between the sun and Earth.
When this happens, the moon blocks the light of the sun from reaching Earth.
This causes an eclipse of the sun, or solar eclipse. During a solar
eclipse, the moon casts a shadow onto Earth.
There are three types of solar eclipses.
The first is a total solar eclipse. A total solar eclipse is only visible
from a small area on Earth. The people who see the total eclipse are in the
center of the moon’s shadow when it hits Earth. The sky becomes very dark, as
if it were night. For a total eclipse to take place, the sun, moon and Earth
must be in a direct line.
[10]The second type of solar
eclipse is a partial solar eclipse. This happens when the sun, moon and Earth
are not exactly lined up. The sun appears to have a dark shadow on only a small
part of its surface.
The third type is an annular solar
eclipse. An annular eclipse happens when the moon is farthest from Earth.
Because the moon is farther away from Earth, it seems smaller. It does not
block the entire view of the sun. The moon in front of the sun looks like a
dark disk on top of a larger sun-colored disk. This creates what looks like a
ring around the moon.
During a solar eclipse, the moon casts two shadows on Earth. The first shadow
is called the umbra. This shadow gets smaller as it reaches Earth. It is the
dark center of the moon’s shadow. The second shadow is called the penumbra .
The penumbra gets larger as it reaches Earth. People standing in the penumbra
will see a partial eclipse. People standing in the umbra will see a total
eclipse.
WHEN IS THE NEXT SOLAR ECLIPSE?
On Monday, Aug. 21, 2017, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Anyone within the path of totality3 can see one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights — a total solar eclipse. This path, where the moon will completely cover the sun so the sun’s corona can be seen, will stretch from Salem, Oregon, to Charleston, South Carolina. Observers outside this path will still see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun’s disk.
